Responsible Tourism Courses Educate Travelers on how to
Leave the World a Better Place

Boulder, Colorado (October 2004) - The University of Colorado’s Center for Sustainable Tourism (CST) and Sustainable Travel International (STI), announced today the release of a new edutainment-oriented course for travelers. STI, a US-based non-profit, is teaming up with CST to support educational opportunities related to responsible travel and sustainable development of the tourism industry.

Entitled “Responsible Tourism and the Personal Travel Experience” the program is designed to help conscientious consumers, travelers and industry professionals make responsible choices when planning and engaging in vacation and business travel. The course also encourages travel in ways that contribute to the well being of local communities and the conservation of local cultures and the environment.

Representatives of STI and CST are available to present the course to local community groups throughout Colorado. The course is also available to educators who are interested in presenting this important subject matter to groups in their regions. STI and CST are also available to participate in conferences, lectures, panel discussions, roundtable discussions and other educational venues to share ideas and information about the latest responsible travel and sustainable tourism-related topics and trends.

Evidence supports a shift in consumer purchasing habits toward more responsible travel choices. Those companies that hop on board, STI claims, will do well, and those that don’t will be left behind.

There is, however, a difference, between organic food labeling and sustainable tourism certification. For example, rather than a pass/fail system, STI is creating an eco-label that is based on a rating system that measures the extent to which tourism suppliers mitigate their negative economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts and enhance their positive impacts.

This, in turn, will assist consumers in making informed decisions, helping them to discern between companies who market themselves as eco-friendly and companies who actually engage in sustainable business practices.
