Travel Industry to Benefit from Non-Profit Status Approval of Prominent Organization

Boulder, Colorado (June 24, 2004) - Sustainable Travel International (STI), the membership-based not-for-profit organization, announced today that its 501(c)(3) application has been approved by the IRS. This will provide STI with an opportunity to secure the funding it needs to help the travel and tourism industry transition toward a more sustainable future.

This is a huge step forward for sustainable tourism development within the U.S. travel and tourism industry and beyond, as STI can now acquire appropriate funding to help implement their educational and eco-certification programs. But it hasn't come without difficulty, the good news finally arriving nearly two years after STI's formation "During that time", cites STI's President Brian T. Mullis "we have created a huge support network, including leaders in the travel industry, government, other non-profits and consumers across the globe." In fact, STI has gained so much support that between their well-positioned Executive Board and hard working volunteers, STI now has a part-to-full time workforce of over 25 people. In addition, the company has members from over 30 countries, and its web site attracts upwards of 20,000 unique visitors per month.

The horizon is bright for STI, but funding is essential at this stage. "Regardless," concludes Mullis "we're confident that this is the beginning of a new era for STI in helping to make the travel industry a real force for positive change globally."

With the new tax-exempt status, STI welcomes charitable donations from individuals, foundations and organizations. For more information on supporting STI, visit the company's web site.

; font-family: arial; color: #333333">STI also calculated overall GHG impacts based on a 2005 census report of 284,400 residents in Boulder County. With figures suggesting that 180,025 are commuting (63.3% being between the ages of 18-65 and deducting 4.9% unemployment rate), this totals nearly 439 million miles driven to and from work per year and an estimated 171,657 metric tons of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere which equates to over 378,439,765 pounds. Offsetting this amount would be the equivalent to keeping 37,155 passenger cars off the road for one year, saving nearly 20 million gallons of gas, providing electricity to over 22,000 households for one year, or the equivalent of 4,401,472 tree seedlings grown for ten years.
