Media Update: December 2005
Green Gear Guide Released
Featuring Eco-friendly and Fair Trade Products
Boulder, CO (December 5, 2005) - With the holiday season upon us, conscientious consumers are looking for the perfect gift for the travel and outdoor enthusiasts in their lives. To help, Sustainable Travel International (STI) has released the 1st Annual Green Gear Guide, just in time for the holidays.
"Outdoor equipment and clothing are enormously popular," says STI President Brian T. Mullis. And he's right. According to the Outdoor Industry Association, 141 million Americans aged 16 and up participated in at least one outdoor activity in 2004. "Unfortunately, many outdoor products are produced under oppressive labor conditions, through energy or resource intensive processes, or with harmful toxic materials," Mullis continues. "For example, the EPA recently stated that Teflon is a likely human carcinogen, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic, which is widely-used in outdoor equipment, releases carcinogenic dioxin and is considered a health hazard from production through disposal."
The good news is that a growing number of companies have incorporated sustainable practices into their operations. Both industry leaders and newer companies are producing eco-friendly products while supporting environmental conservation. STI has reviewed what's on the market and assembled a comprehensive Green Gear Guide. All of the products in this user-friendly guide must meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Be produced using resource efficient, recycled, renewable, organic, and or recyclable materials;
- Be offered by distributors that gain fair prices for the local producers of their goods
- Allow consumers to enjoy the outdoors in a more eco-friendly manner.
The Green Gear Guide, which highlights such companies as All Terrain, Patagonia, Clif Bar, Mountain Hardware, and many others, is available on-line or in print. For view or request a copy of the Green Gear Guide, visit www.sustainabletravel.com, call 800-276-7764 or email info@sustainabletravel.com.
