| Sustainable Policy: |
Tailwind Jungle Lodge is located in an extremely unique stretch of coastline. Our jungle is some of the last remaining coastal jungle in Mexico. In recent years this area has attracted much attention from resort developers and Americans looking to build second homes. Consequently these invaluable wild places are at high risk. Tailwind aims to demonstrate to the community of San Pancho what Sustainable Development can look like. Both Tailwind guests and local people (American and Mexican) experience the joys of low impact/ecologically conscientious living in the jungle through Tailwinds wilderness tours and experiences with our carefully designed bungalows and headquarters. Tailwind has a tremendous opportunity to lead by example and set the tone for the development of this area and we seek to integrate all aspects of sustainability - environmental, economic and socio-cultural - into our operations in order to lead this exquisite area of jungle coastline in a hopeful direction.

| Ecological/Environmental
Impact: |
Tailwind was constructed with goal of cohabitating with the jungle systems and rhythms and limiting our impact on this spectacular wilderness. Many natural building materials were taken from our 5 acre property and from nearby resources (beach stones, trees downed in recent hurricanes, renewable fronds for palapa roves, drift wood, bamboo, etc.). Tailwind uses candles and CFL light bulbs to minimize electricity use. Rainwater is collected on our tile decks during the rainy summer months; we will continue to expand our rainwater catchments in the coming years. All guests and employees use natural, biodegradable soaps for washing and all of our grey water is recycled to water the gardens. Tailwind aims to introduce only native, low water plant species into our jungle gardens, as we work towards xeriscaping our gardens. Tailwind uses low-flush and composting toilets to minimize water use. All of Tailwind's employees and guests compost all natural waste and recycle or reuse all possible containers. Cloth bags are used for groceries. We are currently working on increasing our bulk purchases and minimizing our use of plastic containers in the future. Propane is used for cooking and heating water. Over the years Tailwind has identified much of the flora and fauna on our property and we seek continue to learn about this thriving coastal jungle eco-system. |
| Social/Cultural
Impact: |
Tailwind strongly believes in connecting the local people with the natural wild habitat of this coastline. At every opportunity we invite local people to come and visit our headquarters and enjoy a meal under the palms. We have annually hosted the local children (from after-school program run by the non-profit, EntreAmigos) for hikes on our jungle trails and a swims off the beach. Together, the Tailwind staff and the local kids hand painted wooden signs identifying the flora to create an interpretive nature trail on the Tailwind property. The Tailwind staff is also regularly involved in community events such as trash pick up days, spade and neuter clinics for stray animals, tree planting and fundraisers for EntreAmigos. Tailwind staff members have also volunteered in the local San Pancho organic garden. As a fledgling eco-lodge Tailwind is just beginning to hire employees outside the family. All new employees are from the town of San Pancho (3 miles from Tailwind) or from Sayulita (10 miles). This year we are excited to be merging our adventure tours with a local tour operator in San Pancho. |
| Economic
Impact: |
Tailwind realizes the important of developing the local economy. Throughout the development of Tailwind we have relied upon local services (builders, building products, local workers, accounting services etc.) Our daily needs are satisfied by local providers, our foods come from the grocery store, bakery, and community organic garden. Grocery stores, give our guests tours of the local San Pancho organic garden. We also direct guests to local restaurants, gift shops carrying goods from local artists, local art galleries and community events. Will soon display local art in our bungalows to promote our local artists to our guests. Tailwind donates 1% of our annual profits to local non-profits: EntreAmigos and the Turtle Protection Group.

| Innovative
Best Practices: |
Tailwind practices humility and open-mindedness in our approach to sustainability. We believe that there are many perspectives on what sustainable development should look like, sustainability is an incredibly complex issue. Tailwind perceives sustainability to be a mosaic of concepts and ideas that, with a bit of effort, can come together to make our lives, the lives of others, and the lives of the next generation happy, healthy and harmonious. We are always looking for input and suggestions from the local community, from our employees and from our guests as to how we can improve the sustainability of Tailwind.
