H.E.L.P. stands for Human Experience Linking Project: our non-profit association promote Local Community Development Programs, through special and unique Responsible Tourism itineraries, in the preserved and untamed Casamance Region in Southern Senegal. Different levels of intervention are available, according to the type of participation chosen by the Traveler. We believe in an ethic of voyaging in which the words Understanding, Integration, Sharing and Participating become authentic and felt deeply by the people involved in the project. We firmly believe that an appropriate form of tourism can be the key to unfold many inspiring moments, in terms of human knowledge and understanding, and also as a true vehicle of environmental awareness and sustainable development.

| Sustainable Policy: |
We work with local communities, establishments and individuals to promote sustainable and fair tourism opportunities that help local economies while at the same time minimizing negative environmental and cultural impacts. We are well aware of the impact that tourism can have in remote places and on small isolated villages and communities, where ancient and therefore precious cultures are still alive and nurtured. All group sizes for our scheduled tours and missions are between 2 and a maximum of 8 persons. That lead to less impact both on the environment and the people that we visit as well as allowing for more supervision, advice and explanations, alongside an effective chance of understanding and integration with a different culture. We do believe that Inspired Travel means experiencing the place, its people, its cultures, traditions, foods and ways of life. All of our actions and trips aim to create precious links among travelers and local communities, who mutually benefit from the soulful moments spent together. |
| Ecological/Environmental
Impact: |
Our organization has been committed to offering inspiring journeys aiming to awake a true awareness of the regions visited, with a profound respect for Nature and the environment. From this awareness and respect comes a reverence for all living matter in the eco-zone visited. We always travel in small groups (a maximum of 8, average group size of 4) that are less intrusive on villages and in natural areas, where waste treatment is extremely difficult. Guests are instructed on arrival about waste disposal and are advised on our "Leave No Trace" policies and principles: leave the area as we found it, not removing anything and taking all unwanted possessions or waste with us until a suitable disposal facility is found. We support and practice the art of re-use and recycle wherever possible, and instruct travelers on the utility of these conducts. Guests are instructed on water consumption at our Guesthouse for showers and baths; we encourage our travelers to use water sparingly for showering and washing. Water is the most precious resource here in Africa, and everywhere in our Planet: Guests are informed about the necessity of local population to walk for miles in order to provide water for their community, and brought to villages where this practice is one of the main daily duties. Reducing unnecessary lighting, by switching off all electrical equipment when not required. We promote, encourage and sponsor the provision of solar panel products and appliances to villages and communities. We promote the electronic form of brochures and web-related sources of information and correspondence, as to reduce considerably paper consumption in terms of print runs and mailing envelopes. We believe that an authentic travel experience can surely be a life changing experience in terms of environmental awareness, and that guests can continue these conducts once they are back home, and instruct others to do so. Nature flows through a delicate and sensitive equilibrium, it is our task and responsibility to work towards the respect and maintenance of the eco-system we all live in. |
| Social/Cultural
Impact: |
Tour leaders and guides educate and ensure the social and environmental awareness of the group. We are ambassadors for the region, its culture, traditions and beliefs: before arriving at a community, tour leaders and local guides inform our Clients about local customs and general recommendations concerning interactions, religion, dress codes, local rules, traditions and social conventions to which they should be sensitive, such as: BEGGING - Try to avoid giving out money, candies and small objects. Our actions are towards a real and lasting education for children and people in need, consigning gifts, goods and materials to the leaders of the village or family we are visiting, for a fair and proper distribution.
PHOTOGRAPHS - Always ask permission to photograph local people and respect their decision. RELIGION AND DRESS CODES: Respect local beliefs and customs, as a proof of higher understanding and willing to share and interact. This is also to make them aware of the impact their behavior can have on the local population. |
| Economic
Impact: |
Each of our Community Development Project involves several groups of workers, artists and families, providing then sustainable employment and allowing them to build personal financial security; all of the materials, gears and overall necessities are bought on local stores and markets. These establishments employ local people and source food and beverages locally. All of this benefits the local economy. 20% of the cost of our Voluntourism trips is invested directly into the specific humanitarian project. We strictly employ local workforce, at a good and fair wage. Many are provided with meals and accommodation as part of their employment package. We support local business to enhance our impact on the community. We encourage our Guests to buy souvenirs such as arts, crafts and clothes locally as well as eat and drink in locally owned bars and restaurants. Local resources, as locally owned goods and services are used throughout all of our trips. Money spent on locally produced goods and needed services support both income and employment to the communities that we visit. We support local artists groups by scheduling shows and performances for the visiting travelers. Giving something back is essential: as part of our commitment to local communities, our non-profit association distributes baby-kits, food provisions and anti-mosquitoes nets to families and people in need. When possible, these actions are performed together with our travelers groups, as to allow a deeper interaction and understanding. All activities enjoyed by guests are authentic and representative of the local community: we encourage our groups to participate in local festivals and events that will enhance their cultural awareness of the local realities. Guides prepare lunches and snacks for Guests from foods that are purchased locally and best represent the region's cuisine. Our Guesthouse menu is filled with rich and tasteful local meals and recipes: Guests are gladly taken to local markets as to provide food and ingredients, and then invited to learn local cooking skills. |
| Innovative
Best Practices: |
H.E.L.P TRAVEL also develops a new concept of Fundamental Tourism, which offers the opportunity to live a unique experience in terms of travelling. The main aspect of these trips is the incorporation of a specific and personal Local Community Development Project to an adventure itinerary. These Aid and Assistance individual achievements will be undertaken by travellers to help a person or a community. Conceived, prepared and developed by qualified professionals, the Fundamental Tourism programs aim to optimize the cultural exchanges, provide an authentic and enlightening discovery travel, within profound integration conditions. All of these details certify our Fundamental Travel Proposals as a concept capable to offer all the necessary conditions to a fair equilibrium among the three different aspects, Environmental, Economical and Social, primal necessities for a real understanding of the needs of sustainability. |
