Responsible Travel: St. Moritz, Switzerland

Poets have sung its praises, artists have painted it, and countless photographers have captured beautiful St. Moritz in their lenses. Known as the home of the fabled goat-herder Heidi, the town features the Swiss National Park, which allows visitors to discover local plants and wildlife while observing breathtaking Alpine landscapes.

St. Moritz offers hiking excursions over glaciers and narrow ridges, as well as mountain climbing and unforgettable skiing experiences. More than 218 miles (350 km) of snow-covered runs at altitudes from 5,906 to 10,827 feet (1800 to 3300 m) above sea level are available.

The national park is protected from all human influence and interference. All plant and animal life is left to its natural development. Since its founding, there is no hunting, fishing, exploitation or maintenance of forests and meadows. The park contains a rich and varied natural flora and fauna, which is continually researched. About 650 flowering plant species have been recorded. There also are thousands of genuses of lichen, moss, fungi, ferns and algae.

In addition to plants, more than 5,000 animal species live in the park. Highlighting the area are 1,400 species of butterflies, four species of fish, 60 species of nesting birds and 30 species of mammals. The interconnection of plant and animal population is monitored closely.

To protect the park, visitors are instructed to stay on marked trails and resting areas. Nothing can be taken out of the park, including flowers, berries, stones, etc. Setting up a camp, lighting a fire and walking a dog are forbidden.

While visiting the park, guests can embark on the Clean Energy St. Moritz Tour, which teaches them about renewable energy sources, including wind, solar and biogas. While traveling on the new suspension railway, visitors view solar power cells at work, wind power generation in a natural setting and the ARA Celerina (biogas) plant. Several of the area's resorts use these alternative energy sources for power.

For more information about St. Moritz and its national park, visit www.st.moritz.ch.
