Training Course Overview

The 6-day course provides an in-depth review of certification in the travel industry, sustainable tourism standards, impact measurement and management, and STEP. Practical examples of sustainability initiatives and current industry best practices are illustrated throughout the program. The course also includes an on-site assessment of a hotel, attraction or tour operator, team exercises and group discussions to ensure a focus on the practical application of STEP.

The Training Course includes:

  • 3 days training on the STEP standard
  • 3 day on-site assessment and audit of an accommodation
  • Pre-read and other course materials (copy of the Self-assessment, case studies, access to STEP online, etc.)
  • Examination fees
  • Lunch on each day of the course with vegetarian options available upon request
  • Internet access in the classroom on each day of the course
  • Please note that you will need to bring your own laptop

Benefits
The course informs assessors, consultants, travel and tourism professionals, and environmental management professionals about the STEP standard and its significance for the travel and tourism sector. The course also provides learning opportunities for developing and applying sustainability principles and strategies to help measure and manage environmental, socio-cultural and economic impacts. In addition, those assessors and consultants who successfully complete the course will have opportunities to work with Sustainable Travel International and its clients.

The Training Course is designed for:

  • Travel and tourism industry and other business professionals who are seeking to become STEP Assessors, sustainable tourism consultants, or are seeking to obtain Eco-certification through STEP
  • Environmental management professionals, travel and tourism staff (e.g. hotels, attractions, departments of tourism, etc.), and other professionals (e.g. protected area managers) who are interested in setting and achieving environmental objectives.
  • Travel and tourism-related business that are interested in implementing sustainable tourism practices within their operations, and learning how to navigate the Self-assessment and Eco-certification processes.

Pre-Requisites

  1. General Participants. Participants consist of: travel and tourism industry professionals and other business professionals who are seeking to become sustainable tourism consultants, or are seeking to obtain Eco-certification through STEP; travel and tourism-related businesses that are interested in implementing sustainable tourism practices within their operations, and learning how to navigate the Self-assessment and Eco-certification processes; and Environmental management professionals, travel and tourism staff, and other professionals who are interested in setting and achieving environmental objectives. No prior experience is required for General Participants who want to attend the Training Course. All course attendees will successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Completion.
  2. Assessors. Assessors wishing to become a STEP-certified Assessor should be able to demonstrate that they: have Assessor and/or Auditor qualifications consistent with a recognized Auditor or Registration body; relevant practical experience as a Lead Auditor; have completed EMS Auditor training; and/or have extensive experience in sustainable tourism. Assessors will be required to complete and pass the relevant course requirements, and may be required to submit evidence of relevant qualifications and experience.
