The Who, What, When, Where and Why for STI

Who? Sustainable Travel International (STI) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting responsible tourism, supporting sustainable development, and helping travelers and travel providers protect the environments and cultures they visit.

What? STI is dedicated to providing education and outreach services that will lessen the toll that travel and tourism takes on the environment and local cultures. By providing tangible, solutions-oriented programs, STI is taking a holistic approach to addressing global sustainable development within the travel and tourism industry.

When? Founded in 2002 during the International Year of Ecotourism, STI has been operating in a transparent manner since its inception. Feedback from interested parties is always welcomed. To help ensure the best possible process for continually evolving concepts and realistic application, please email us your feedback.

Where? STI is a leader in sustainable tourism development within the North American marketplace. Though STI has a strong focus within North American, all of its programs - membership, carbon offsets, educational training, travel philanthropy, etc. - are available globally.

Why? Tourism is arguably the world's largest industry. It generates about 10% of total world GDP and employs over 10% of the global workforce, and it's on the verge of tremendous growth. In 2005, there were 808 million international tourism arrivals, a figure that the World Tourism Organization expects to reach one billion by 2010.
