Project Needs and Beneficiaries

In Peru, 25% of the total population and approximately 70% of the rural and isolated areas lack electricity. Due to the rough terrain, the most cost efficient and environmentally friendly systems for remote areas are off-grid community based energy options, however very few have been installed. This project will provide benefits of clean, renewable energy to over 5000 individuals in the Andean highlands of the District of Chirinos, Department of Cajamarca, Peru.

Activities

This project will provide clean and renewable electricity to 4 health clinics, 95 homes, 20 schools, and 11 community buildings through use of photovoltaic cells and micro hydropower.

Potential Long Term Impact

Community members will help install, manage, and eventually take ownership of the renewable energy systems that provide electricity to their own homes, schools, and health clinics. 20 villages and over 5000 people will benefit.

Project Message

"These villages are excited to build and own their own energy projects for light and electricity." - Anna Garwood, Program Manager

Organization - Green Empowerment

Mission

Green Empowerment promotes community-based renewable energy, delivery of potable water, and related watershed restoration internationally to generate social and environmental progress.

Programs

Green Empowerment brings electricity and water to communities in the less developed world through renewable energy systems (micro hydro, biomass, and solar power) to stimulate positive social and economic advances. We emphasize local leadership, community participation, and long-term economic and environmental sustainability. Our projects produce electricity for residential and community use to promote local economic development and micro-enterprises and deliver potable water.
