Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Israel has not yet realized the vast untapped potential of renewable energy (RE) community entrepreneurship. Over 95% of the energy used in the country depends on imported fossil fuels. Incentives for RE installations are very few. Communities who want to implement RE technologies encounter many barriers. There is an urgent need to prove that it is possible and practical to implement RE technologies on the community level.
Activities
AIES will install a medium size wind turbine and PV installations. It will study, document and monitor all stages of development and develop proposed solutions for mainstreaming these types of projects while monitoring the benefits of the installatio.
Potential Long Term Impact
Show that communities can successfully develop and install RE technologies, and help to build momentum, motivation and the required experience for other communities to follow. Contribute to the long term goal of energy independence for Israel.
Project Message
"The sooner we realize that some of the biggest environmental, social and economical benefits of RE technologies lies with local entrepreneurship, the closest we will get to a sustainable energy future." - Mr. Ofer Ben-Dov, Director, RE Community Entrepreneurship Initiative
Organization - Arava Institute for Environmental Studies
Mission
The AIES was funded in 1996 and its mission goes beyond training and teaching to include contributing to the state of knowledge available about a range of environmental matters and problems. While faculty and students have complete autonomy regarding their research agenda, the Institute encourages applied initiatives with the ability to improve the quality of decision-making in environmental matters.
Programs
Some of AIES programs include: the Arava Center for Environmental Policy, Sustainable Agriculture program, Biodiversity program, Dead Sea Basin program, Stream Restoration program, Air Quality program, and an Environmental Education program.
