Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Local conservationists from all over Honduras will be trained to serve as nature guides and to generate alternative sources of income. In the past, Rare has conducted the Nature Guide Training Program and recruited individuals who regularly conduct various destructive behaviors including bomb fishing and unsustainable harvesting of exotic plants. With this training, individuals can benefit from adopting sustainable practices that enhance environmental conservation.
Activities
Rare will offer classes in conversation English, natural history, and intepretation. By becoming local tour guides, these individuals have the opportunity to be stewards of Honduras' natural treasures while also benefitting from conservation.
Potential Long Term Impact
Participants of Rare's Nature Guide Training Program have the chance to protect Honduras' natural and cultural heritage and pass on the legacy of conservation to their communities.
Project Message
"The Nature Guide Training course makes a lasting contribution by teaching people from local communities new skills to improve their quality of life." - Erasmo Sosa, Honduras Ministry of Tourism
Organization - Rare
Mission
To protect wildlands of globally significant biodiversity by enabling local people to benefit from their preservation.
Programs
Rare Pride employs private sector marketing techniques to inspire people who live in the world's most biodiverse places to embrace conservation. Rare-trained local campaign managers employ various awareness-raising tools to address prevailing behaviors and attitudes. Rare Radio uses drama to tackle social problems affecting both conservation and quality of life in local communities. Rare Enterprises marries economic and environmental sustainability in fragile natural areas through ecotourism.
