Our Programs - Learn about STEP

STEP 2.0 Rating System
Applicants who wish to receive 1 to 2 stars and a "Self-Assessment Completed" eco-label have to provide STI with specific evidence to demonstrate or verify that they comply with all of the Required criteria. Those that wish to receive 3 to 5 stars and a "Professionally Audited" eco-label have to have an on-site audit, which verifies that they comply with a predetermined percentage of the available points.

There are eight Business Sections or categories in the STEP Self-assessment Application. In each category, related criteria that are grouped into a row. Each row features Incubator, Initiative, and Integrated criteria that are awarded 1 point, 3 points, or 9 points respectively. Applicants are only required to comply with one criterion per row not including any Required criteria. Applicants may, however, comply with more than one criterion per row, increasing the likelihood that they receive 5 stars.

Criterion and questions involving a more reactive approach, such as doing no harm or mitigating negative impacts, receive a lower point value. Higher point values are assigned to criterion that are considered best practices, including those that encourage preventative and proactive actions toward supporting environmental conservation, protecting cultural heritage, and promoting cross-cultural understanding and economic development.

Applicants may opt to answer Not Applicable (N/a) for select questions. In each of these instances, the applicant will have to provide proof that N/a applies during the on-site audit process. Applicants who answer N/a for select questions will receive a final rating percentage score based only on the applicable items.

Final ratings will be assigned to applicants based on the STEP 2.0 rating system detailed below. Note that the rating system for STEP 1.0 is available here:
