Continental Airlines. Continental is committed to promoting environmental responsibility within its culture and is committed to reducing environmental impacts. To support that goal, the airline in mid-2006 launched an extensive internal review of existing environmental procedures, along with a comprehensive review of future possibilities, including carbon offset programs.

Continental has achieved an almost 35 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption per revenue passenger mile flown over the past 10 years. This is due in large part to the efforts of its employees in streamlining operational procedures and to an investment of more than $12 billion to acquire 270 fuel-efficient aircraft and related equipment.

In order to minimize the impact on the environment from its fleet and ground service equipment, Continental will continue to invest in the most effective technology and operating procedures feasible. Through these investments and other projects, including the construction of airport facilities in an environmentally responsible manner and the testing of alternative fuels, Continental will continue to monitor the environmental impact of its business.

At United Airlines we are committed to taking action to reduce our impact on the environment both in the air and on the ground. We’re working across our company and industry to minimize our impact, and address CO2 emissions, conserve energy resources, explore energy alternatives and expand our waste management efforts.

As we fly to more than 200 cities around the world, our pilots and operations professionals use the latest flight techniques and route planning to conserve fuel, reduce noise and keep the air clear and clean by reducing emissions. We’ve also made modifications to some of our planes, installing aerodynamic “winglets” to conserve fuel and extend the distance an aircraft can fly by reducing aerodynamic drag.

On the ground, we have implemented programs to conserve jet fuel, reduce energy use and minimize emissions. During arrivals and departures, we promote taxiing aircraft with a single engine and the use of tractors rather than jet fuel to move planes between gates and maintenance facilities. To save additional fuel, we connect aircraft to available ground power sources while planes are stationed at the gate. Nearly 25 percent of the ground support equipment we use to move people and cargo is powered by electricity and alternative fuels. We continue to assess our environmental footprint, focusing on our worldwide fleet operations, ground support operations, and the buildings we occupy, to inform future initiatives that can further reduce our impact on the environment.

In 2009 we launched our carbon offset program enabling our customers to offset the carbon footprint specific to their travels on United through charitable contributions in support of carbon reduction programs offered through STI, focusing on international reforestation, renewable energy and energy efficiency.

United Airlines has established two committees that oversee the company’s social responsibility strategies and performance, including the environment. The Public Responsibility Committee of the Board of Directors reviews the Company’s policies and positioning with respect to social responsibility issues and public policy. The Environmental Responsibility Council, composed of senior officers of the company, oversees the development of environmental policies, positions, and programs to reduce our impact on the environment.

At Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. our commitment to the environment stretches throughout the organization from senior management to the men and women on our ships. The sustainability of our planet is dependent on clean seas and pure air. It is central to our guests’ vacation experience and is at the core of our commitment to environmental stewardship. We acknowledge that we are not perfect but are dedicated to continually improving our operations both on our ships and ashore.

For 40 years we have made steady progress in our environmental programs. In 1992, we formalized our commitment to environmental improvement with our SaveTheWaves® program.

The four key principles of SaveTheWaves® are:

  • Go Above and Beyond Compliance
  • Practice Pollution Prevention
  • Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle
  • Continual Improvement

The Ocean Fund, established in 1996, has awarded over $10 million in support of marine conservation projects related to ocean science, climate change, key marine species, education and innovative technologies. It is a demonstration of our belief that active participation in charitable activities, both on behalf of the company and as individuals, is a core component of environmental stewardship.

Furthering our commitment to environmental stewardship in 1998, we were the first cruise company to obtain ISO14001:2000 certification.

In 2008, Jamie Sweeting (STI Executive Board Member) was hired as Vice President of Environmental Stewardship and Global Chief Environmental Officer to oversee the company’s environmental stewardship commitments.

Working with Conservation International and Sustainable Travel International we are developing a comprehensive Environmental Stewardship Strategy.

We believe companies such as ours can be both financially successful and good stewards of the environment. Indeed, we believe these attributes are inextricably tied into our continued success as a company.
